DEDICATION

This yearbook is dedicated to Professor Harold Gay who passed away on April 2, 1986.

Something has been taken from us which cannot be replaced. Harold was a sharing colleague, a ready
friend, and an outstanding teacher. He was also an academic professional whose knowledge of history
and the governance of public life enriched the intellects not only of his students but of all those who
worked with him.

Rest in peace, Professor Gay. All who knew you will greatly miss you.

*NOTE: This yearbook was to be dedicated to the original thirteen faculty members of Massasoit. We
would like to acknowledge them. They are: Charles Caputo, Robert Cusick, T.P. Elliott-Smith, Delia
Feeney, Patricia Getch, Robert Landry, Victor MacNeil, Marilyn Maxwell, John Murray, John Murgo,
Robert Ouellett, Robert Small, and (Harold Gay).

IN MEMORIAM

Our college community has lost a very dear friend. Gerry Reese epitomized the highest ideals of
Massasoit Community College. Students, former students, members of the faculty and College staff
will always remember his wise counsel, ready wit and ever warm interest in each one of us.

We know that Gerry's great love of Massasoit will continue to inspire us all to fulfill the vision of
excellence he saw for our College.

We join together in expressing our great affection and concern for his family and ask that God grant
our friend eternal peace.

THE STUDENT SENATE BIDS
FAREWELL TO A FRIEND

The Student Senate of 1985-1986 bids farewell to Gerald E. Reese who passed away on June 28,
1986.

Gerry Reese, Director of Admissions and Assistant Dean of Students, was a friend to all who knew
him. Always there to assist any student, Dean Reese made us all proud to know him.

His death is indeed a great loss to all who knew and loved him, as well as a loss to those who will never
have the pleasure of knowing him.

Rest in peace, Dean Reese. We will all greatly miss you, your warm smile, kind words, and friend-
ship.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As we look back together over the 1 985 - 1 986 academic year , I am sure that we can agree on one thing :
it certainly was not dull. From the merger with the Blue Hills Technical Institute in Canton to the impact
of the International Touch at the Brockton campus, from the excitement caused by our new computer
system to the thrills generated by our outstanding soccer team, and from the promise of our own cable
TV channel to the brillance of "The Importance of Being Earnest," we must admit that we have been
living in exciting times. In a real sense, the opening of our year with Hurricane Gloria could not have
been more appropriate, as 1985-1986 has certainly matched that storm in intensity and change, in an
energy used to build a stronger, more vital Massasoit Community College than has ever been known
before. For the part that you as students have played in that growth, we shall be ever grateful.

In thanking you for making Massasoit a part of your lives, I would like to wish each of you every good

fortune in the years to come. I would also like to remind you that Massasoit Community College will

always be here for you. As you continue to grow, in the workplace, in other institutions of learning, and

in the home, please remember us, and do come back to let us know how you are doing. We shall

certainly remember the Class of 1986.

President Gerard Burke

DEANS

Dean Yess

Dean Otis

Dean Gomes

The namesake of this college, Massasoit, was born
within the present boundaries of Massachusetts in 1580.
His tribe, the Wampanoags, were located throughout
the regions of Bristol, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.
The Wampanoags, who had at one time numbered
several thousand, had almost been destroyed by an
epidemic just before the arrival of the " Mayflower."

In March of 1621, an Indian appeared in Plymouth,
and surprised the Pilgrims by speaking to them in
English. He was Samoset, and had come to arrange a
meeting between the Governor of Plymouth, William
Bradford, and the Chief of the Wampanoags, Massasoit.
A week later a treaty of peace was signed by the two
men, a treaty which held without violation for fifty-four
years.

In 1623, Massasoit became ill and was visited by
Edward Winslow who effected a cure. In return,
Massasoit revealed that a neighboring tribe was to make
an attack on the white men.

All through his reign as chief, Massasoit made a
practice of living in harmony with the colonists. A writer
of the period said of him:

"He was a chief renowned more in peace than in war, and was, as long as
he lived, a friend to the English, even as they committed repeated
usurpations upon his land a liberties."

Little is known about the chief from 1649, when he sold
the site of Duxbury to the English, until his death in
1662.
